Historic Bitcoin Dates

January 3 (2009) – The genesis block was mined by Satoshi Nakamoto, creating the first 50 bitcoin.

January 10 (2017) – The lightning network is launched.

January 12 (2009) – Satoshi send Hal Finney some Bitcoin in the first-ever transaction.

January 14 (2016) – The lightning whitepaper is released.

February 7 (2014) – MtGox collapses. Over 800,000 bitcoin were lost on this day. This day now marks the ‘Not your keys, not your coins’ day, a reminder to hold your own keys.

April 27 (2022) – Central African Republic makes Bitcoin legal tender, the second domino to fall.

May 21 (2021) – China bans bitcoin mining. A huge drop in hash rate followed as miners switched off and started to move to other countries.

May 22 (2010) – Bitcoin Pizza Day. An American developer called Laszlo Hanyecz spent 10,000 bitcoin on two pizzas from a Papa John’s in Jacksonville, Florida.

August 15th (2015) – The blocksize war began on this day when a new version of Bitcoin was released creating a new controversial fork. The new fork ultimately failed.

August 18 (2008) – The domain bitcoin.org was registered.

September 7 (2021) – On this day El Salvador made Bitcoin legal tender, the first domino to fall.

October 5 (2009) – The first calculation of price. Bitcoin is determined to be worth 0.001 USD, due to the cost of electricity to create it.

October 31 (2008) – The Bitcoin White paper is published.

December 12 (2010) – Satoshi Nakamoto disappeared. On this day Satoshi wrote his last post on the Bitcointalk forum.
